“GOING HOME”

After the events of 9/11 I felt the need to paint something regarding the tragic events of that day involving Flight 93 that crashed in Shanksville, Somerset County, PA.  The crash, occurring so close to my home in Pittsburgh, affected me the most.

I began by painting a large canvas with lots of clouds and the four airplanes ascending into the heavens which to me, was very significant. As a member of the McMurray Art League, I proudly displayed my painting at one of their art shows at the Galleria in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Many people referred to it as “an airplane” picture.  I watched while one young father fully absorbed the meaning of the painting and kneeled before it, explaining the significance to his small son.

Shortly thereafter I began to “re-design” my interpretation of 9/11 and removed the clouds, added the crash sites and named it “271 Patriots”.  Shortly thereafter I donated the picture to the Chapel in Shanksville where it has been officially renamed “Going Home” and has been digitally reproduced for sale to the public.  This artwork has sold many times over with the proceeds going to help defray the cost to keep this beautiful Chapel open to the public. I have been told the people actually weep when they view the painting…what more could an artist ask for? My interpretation has reached out to them and has also touched their hearts.

If you visit the crash site in Shanksville, be sure to get directions to the Chapel. Many other types of memorials are on display there since the long awaited museum is still waiting to be constructed.
