Life Summary:

B. S. in Education at Clarion University of Pennsylvania with a Math. major and Physics minor

Graduate Assistantship at Clarion following graduation, followed by an M.Ed. in Math. in August 1969.

Taught  math & physics at Newport News High School, Newport News, Va.

Began jogging/running shortly after school started with Uncle Duane Saylor.

Married Sherry Eileen Massena of Latrobe in 1969

Member of Lutheran churches.  Played softball for Trinity Lutheran Church for two years (right field, second base, catcher) with one inside-the-park homerun

Moved to Fredericksburg, Va. in 1972 to teach at James Monroe High School.  Taught math & physics, along with being assistant track coach for distance events.

Organized Runner's World Fun Runs at James Monroe track, which continued for several years.

In 1975 ran my first race, a 10 kilometer run, in Johnstown, Pa., by the Incline Plane

Ran my first marathon, 26 miles, 385 yards, (of nine) in 1976 in Baltimore, Md.

Started the Rappahannock Road Runners Club, affiliated with the national RRCA.

Quit teaching to become a computer programmer with Sperry Univac in 1978 at the Naval Surface Weapons Center in Dahlgren, Va.  Worked on the Mk 86 Gun Fire Control System used on U. S. Navy cruisers and destroyers.

Divorced and then supported the MK86 Gun testing in 1980 in San Diego.  Moved to San Diego to work for National Cash Register (NCR)

In 1981 moved back to work at Dahlgren again for Sperry Corporation (Mk 86 and Mk 74).  Then Systems Development Corporation (Marine Air Ground Intelligence System), Syscon (Aegis), Vitro (missile defense), Syscon again (Aegis), Computer Sciences Corporation (Aegis Tactical Utility Function).  Taught computer classes at Germanna Community College.

Moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to rejoin friend Mary Lu Clark (the younger).

Taught algebra for Spartanburg Technical College (now Spartanburg Community College).

Began teaching also for the University of South Carolina Spartanburg (USCS, now USC Upstate)

Married Mary Lu in 2002 (she is assignment editor for WSPA-TV in Spartanburg).

Worked with Dr. James A. Anderson to complete the second edition of his textbook Discrete Mathematics with Combinatorics.  (Included in the Library of Congress)

Taught for Spartanburg Methodist College and Wofford College

Altogether (but mostly for SCC and USC Upstate) taught elementary algebra, college algebra, college mathematics, business mathematics, probability & statistics, discrete mathematics, intro to computers, precalculus I & II, and business calculus.

Work with Supplemental Instruction tutor for College Algebra student at risk of failure.

Awarded a grant to teach with a Tablet PC for the 2009-2010 school year.  Attended WIPTE Conference in 2009.
