Since graduating from Ivy, I have been a designer of sets, lights and costumes for theater, movies and tv. A couple of years after graduation Morris asked me to come back for a semester and teach a course in set design. It was very fulfilling and the students were very talented. I now teach for Point Park University and am an adjunct teacher for CAPA, the high school of performing arts.

Dave's became a morning ritual for me. Sometimes a cheese omelette and coffee, sometimes just a crumble donut. Drawing from life in Market Square became another ritual. After leaving the area to work in advertising in San Diego, became a freelance illustrator, moved to Seattle and finally moved back to PA to be closer to the Oyster House, the best fish sandwich in the world.

After majoring in Photography at Ivy I went on to Sonoma State University in California and majored in Painting. I've never really made any money being an artist, but it has been a lifestyle and a commitment and I do consider my career to be that of an artist.

After graduating from Ivy with a focus on design and illustration, I have worked primarily as an art director & graphic designer for almost 25 years. From in-house designer at Macy's San Francisco to running my own successful design firm in Berkeley, California, I have put the skills I learned at Ivy to work for me everyday and am grateful to the amazing teachers I had there. I am currently working from home, primarily doing identity work, packaging, and coffee table books for Western History Associations, independent publishers and National Parks.

Shortly after my time at Ivy, I returned to my home in the Philadelphia area. I took advantage of a government funded program, "ManPower" where I earned minimum wage to learn the skill of mechanical drafting - which lead to gainful employment and continued education. I got my Bachlor of Architecture from Drexel University after 11 years of night school. I'm now a registered Architect in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. Yea, my lessons at Ivy always served me well. I ran in the Pittsburgh Marathon 3 times and enjoyed the memories and the hills. I am imagining that my Keith Haring early work that I still have in my sketchbooks might help pay for my daughter's college tuition!

I remember finding post-it notes in odd areas of the school that Keith Haring created. Once, Keith was keeping an informal tally with a few friends regarding who would stop and notice his drawings in the hall stairs. When I found a small drawing that particular day, he and I began talking about art, where a person expects to find artwork, and moving to NYC. After that, we always met in school and talked about so many different issues. I don't know about how I would comment on my life after Ivy. But, I do know the time at Ivy was very memorable.

Life after Ivy has been a long strange trip (as the song goes). I've worked for newspapers, ad agencies, magazines and health associations. Ivy helped build a strong foundation for me and I'm still learning. I still enjoy doing cartooning and since started lighthouse photography as well as shooting baseball stadiums around the country. Who knows, maybe one day I'll do something constructive with them. I can't believe how fast the years went by. I hope to hear from some Ivy friends one day.

After Ivy? So much to say in such a little space. After several years on< the west Coast, the last 10 in Seattle, working in corporate creative, my husband (AIP Grad) and I moved back to my home town so that we could slow down a little & get back to making art. I'm a current member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, and have participated in 6 shows in the last 7 months. I am currently the Arts Program Director for Charleroi At & History Center, in Charleroi Pa. Since moving back to the area, I have reconnected with a few other Ivy Grads that are still making art. And yeah, Bish, let's do that Alumni show at Jozart!

This is Jerry Forney. I graduated from Ivy School of Art in 1967. I currently live in Florida and work as a fulltime Graphic Artist at Kennedy Space Center. Great place to work! My wife Ada and I have a side business called Storytree Productions. She is a professional storyteller. I write children's stories and do the illustrations. Nothing published yet. I'm working on it. It's a tough market to break into. Maybe we'll self-publish at some point. I still draw and keep a sketchbook despite the fact that I do the bulk of my professional work on the computer. Who could have ever predicted this big change in the world of the Graphic Arts back in the sixties? It still boggles my mind.
There was Chuck Rakiecz, Paul Harnagy and Jan Kochmanski, Al Tibi and Cheryl Koelmel...we all had a good time drawing cartoons and creating bizarre characters. Jack Barrett was such a funny guy...and an excellent cartoonist. (I've run into him a few times down here at comicons in Orlando, Florida. He's had quite a career as a cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times...I guess I should email him.) I got the impression back then that you weren't planning on making cartooning a career choice. I was, and so was Jan...I still have one of his full color "playboy cartoons" that he gave me. Gosh, what a talented cartoonist (and figure artist). I wonder whatever happened to him? So was Al Mary. He was just plain brilliant. He was a year ahead of me, so I really did't get to know him all that well. I liked the work of Ed Zelinsky and Walt Quader. They drew outrageous cartoons. I guess that's what sticks in my head. That and the work of some of our great instructors.
I did go to work for the Pittsburgh Press as a staff artist (thanks to a tip from Jack Barrett). I worked beside John Johns and Nat Youngblood who have long since retired (even the Press is gone!). I taught briefly at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. From there I took a job in Florida working as an Art Director for the Gannett paper in Cocoa Florida called Today newspaper. From there I worked for various corporations in the Melbourne area as an artist and designer.   I've had several of my own businesses: Pen & Inc. Studio which was a full service commercial art studio, and Future Features Cartoon Syndicate which I owned and operated for ten years. As I said earlier, I currently work at Kennedy Space Center as a Computer Graphic Specialist doing design and illustration for NASA. I've been here for the last eleven years. It's an exciting place to work.  My wife Ada is a professional storyteller who performs in schools, libraries and Folk & Music Festivals here in Central Florida

I've been trying to track down former classmates from Ivy for years. Hopefully this will help. I was there at the bitter end and was able to transfer credits to the Art Institute where I finished my degree. But I wouldn't trade my time at Ivy for anything.  For a pretty innocent, middle class, suburban kid, it was an eye opening, exciting experience.  I've been working in the design field ever since. I'm currently an Art Director at the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and have my own freelance design business as well. Hope to hear from some old friends.

After graduating I moved to Lancaster, PA and worked as a production artist for a local printing company and publisher.
From '80-'82 I was a Jr. Art Director for Gallagher Associates, Boston, MA. In '82 I returned to PA and operated a
successful design studio until 1989. I spent a few years freelancing in Philadelphia, PA and a short stint in Michigan before
returning to Philadelphia where I've spent most of my professional life as an Art Director. In 2006 I left the agency world
and now operate a successful and much slower paced freelance business out of my home in Bucks County, PA.
I have many fond memories of Ivy and made some terrific friends that I'm still in contact with today.
Thanks to your efforts I've been able to find a few of those I'd lost contact with. Much appreciated

I attended Ivy in 1973-74 but did not graduate. I have many fond memories of Ivy and living away from home for the first time in the big city. Classmates names that come to mind are: Ray Wilson, Ray Wayne, Bob Zarecki, Vicki Tyke, Bob Warrender and Candy Mantick. I remember living on the 14th floor of St. Martin's at Duquesne.
I left Pittsburgh and came back to Florida in 1974 and majored in Fine Arts at The University of South Florida. During that time I started working as an orderly in the operating room at a local hospital. That led to nursing school and a whole new direction. I am now a sales rep for Medtronic Cardiac Rhythm Management (pacemakers/defibrillators, etc).
While working as a nurse, I self-published a cartoon book about healthcare, TALES FROM THE BEDSIDE. Here is a sample cartoon:
I would be interested in hearing from any former classmates.

Such fond memories of my 'formative years' at Ivy. Living at 1909 Perrysville Ave with  Darr, Audrey, Brad, Bill and Rob and the various critters rooming with us. I have been with Mellon Financial for the last 20 odd years (my accidental career). Lived in Los Angeles for a time in the early 80's. Involved with many art-related ventures throughout the years including installations and art handling a the Pgh Ctr for the Arts with Vicki Clark. I preserve and collect furniture by mid-century masters and art of the same period.  I still see Alice Winn time to time at openings and rock shows (she had a band for a spell). I never lost touch with Brad Wilson, but the rest of you....

Chuck I just wanted to say you are doing an amazing job listing all the art organizations in W. Pa. It's truly a rich center of artistic activity. I lived in Pittsburgh for 25 years. I taught at the University of Pittsburgh, Allegheny Community College, La Roche College and the Ivy School of Professional Art. I lectured at most of the other Universities. At Duqusne with the late Dr. Rolf Von Eckartberg in the social psychology dept. With Bruce Breeland at Carnegie Mellon University, with Sally Dixon at the Museum as well as Leon Arkus doing environmental work in the city. I even got married to Donna Marie Spadoni from Muse, Pa and we lived in Bethel Park, and unfortunately we divorced in 1973. I was very active with the Community access television creating many shows and showing videos at WQED and other locations in Pittsburgh.

It is such a rich tapestry it amazes me that those years of my life were so fertile in creativity.

Now I am married to a Thai woman from Banphot Phisai in Nakhon Sawan Thailand and have a 4 year old daughter named Nanteta. I have been researching the ancient Khmer temples in Cambodia, Laos and Thailand and have photographed and written extensively on these temples.

I just only returned to San Francisco last week on Oct 4th to finish some work I left in the city three years ago which is how long I was in Thailand teaching at Nakhon Sawan Rajabhat University http://www.earthportals.com/rajabhat.html

I still communicate with a film artist in Pittsburgh Mickey Lies and Rolf Tonio Vaon Eckartberg an artist living in Ford City. I was friends with Bill Wessel and Francis Lakey as well. Richard Dillon has a TV show now in Pittsburgh and I have been trying to get material to him through Mickey Lies. Walter Steding was a great friend as well. Don Miller of the Post Gazette and Barbara Cloud of the Chronicle were always a great joy to communicate with as well.

My writings are all listed at http://www.earthportals.com/Portal_Messenger/willard.html

Thank you Chuck for putting me into context with the film arts of Pittsburgh and a way to bring all those memories back. I believe I still have some of the films I made in storage here in California if for any reason they may be useful to you to keep as a record of those years.

Will

This is great, really. I'm glad someone put this together.  Ivy was a strange and wonderful place. I started at the old city location and was there for the transition to the Hill.  I got a lot out of the experience.......I think.  I am making a living at art. Not fine arts like I thought I would. I have a small architectural design business here on the beautiful coast of Maine.
Immediately after leaving Ivy I lost track of everyone.
I married an environmentalist and have a terrific thirteen year old daughter.
I would love to hear from Mary Collins!! and anyone one else who knows me. Heck! Even if you don't know me get in touch and pretend like you do! I need proof that the Ivy school existed.
If any one is ever in Maine look me up the beer and lobsters are on me.

I was one of the last graduating classes at Ivy, December 1979. Morris closed the place with some of my student loan money in his pocket. I considered it a tip for a great experience and education.  Having attended a school that is now defunct, I felt like I've been treading water in the ocean and now I've found land. Alleluia Brother,?Alleluia!

I will now add Links to my website of the newly found Ivy sites I located today and I will try to locate as many other grads that I can.
Attached is a photo of Willie Pops Stargell inspecting a logo I designed for his foundation. He ran a contest via Ivy for the design. Mr. Caropressi is in the middle, I am on the left.

I moved to the Atlanta area in 1999, again to keep my job with Sprint, where I’ve now been employed for almost 28 years. My job evolved along the way to where I’m now a programmer / analyst. I’ve never done much with my Ivy education, except for doing a few fine art pieces for commission, but I like what I do, so I guess that counts for something.

Comments: You knew me as Randy Plotts. After Ivy I moved to eastern Maine and lived for 7 years, where for a while I did commissioned drawings of houses. I also worked in some factories and cubicles along the way.  A long-planned six month trip to France lasted a bit longer and I ended up living in Paris for over 3 years ('89-92). In France I started painting again and I had a small show of gouaches on paper in Fontainebleau in 1991. Back in the US, I fell into the antiques business, where I have been working for many years with a dealer of fine carpets and textiles. He moved me to San Francisco in 1994 to manage his antique carpet gallery. I am still making art - mostly elaborate collages - and I had a one person show here in San Francisco in 2001 and a recent show in Ashland Oregon this past April.
Classmates whose names I remember: Jean Brock, Doris Ivanhoe, Bonnie Mauro, Dave Levine, Linda Scharf
Some great teachers who gave me a lot: Walt Quader, Abe Weiner, Linda Morris, Baroque Fineberg

A post-Ivy moment: attending the opening of the big Keith Haring exhibition a few years ago at SFMOMA, I was glancing down at a long glass case containing memorabilia and lots of stuff he had saved;  ticket stubs, menus, photos, etc. There was so much of it I perused it casually and was about to turn away. But then staring up at me from all the ephemera was a little white student card with those nearly forgotten words: Ivy School of Professional Art, and its little ivy leaf logo. It was a sudden, weird and strangely moving experience.

Comments: Hey all,
I attend Ivy during the fall of 1978 – to the closing in 1980. It’s very sad to say that an art school of such great minds fell to poor management. When the Ivy doors closed it put a hole in the city that I fell in love with. I had to pay back all the monies that I borrowed to go to school some of that I never had the class time. The school gave me many great things and I still think of the good people that I grew admire in just a short time. From day one I was inspired from the talent the school had and it’s history in the city. I would like to know what happened to a kid by the name of Alex from Ohio, and a great artist by the name of Jodie B, she was a great designer. Thanks to Mr. Yost for teaching me a cool line style and the art of cartooning. Mr. Arent for being a true STEELERS fan. As for my artwork: Freelance Visual Artist/ Visual Art instructor check out the website to see some samples. Ivy school helped me to think like an artist, and to be professional as the artist. I never looked to see if the paper they gave us with our grades and the state seal has any true value, but I know the hands on experience has help many times with my life as an artist. Thank you all for what you have helped me to become with my art. Ivy School of Art was the Best! I have never gone to any other Art school since 1980.

Comments: Wow!  I was really surprised to see what popped up when I Googled,  The Ivy School of Professional Art. Many good memories flashed back through my head.  The hamburgers at  Dave’s Lunch, roaming downtown Pittsburgh with my camera in hand taking hundreds of pictures.
My nervousness at my first figure drawing class after attending an all boys high school.
Life does take some twists and turns and you never know where the road will lead. I tried my hand at some free-lance photography after graduating…worked as a fast food manager, a bouncer and finally landed at the Duquesne Light Co. in 1982. I now work as a Nuclear Mechanic at the Beaver Valley Power Station, fixing everything from Diesel Generators to Reactor Coolant Pumps. I still dabble in photography and paint when I can find the time. I am also a union official and that takes up a considerable amount of time and energy.  I have been married for 26 years and have two great kids….one, my son, a senior at Robert Morris University who is a computer whiz, and the other (a daughter) is deciding on which college to attend, although she has already majored in driving me crazy. I’d love to hear from anyone.

a voice, developed a perspective of how I fit in the world and learned to see. It provided the beginning of an education that
has continued for 40 years and is ongoing… about a lot more than art or photography or design. I’ve earned a living in just
about every aspect of this business and always at the highest levels. And it’s taken me to places I couldn’t have imagined
before I walked into Morris Kirshenbaum’s office or sat in John Delmonte’s life drawing studio.
Eternal thanks from a grateful student.      Friends from Ivy… contact me! Love to hear from you.

Comments: Hello Chuck..Couldn't sleep so I googled then jumped into the Ivy guestbook and past photos.
What a pleasant surprise to see my photo with Bill Shear, also me standing alone with the chair, which was
probably keeping me from floating away ...loved the 60's! I'm teaching Art now and have always been a little
shy about getting in touch with my Ivy days..My memories are so sweet, I hate to age them. Dear Ed Z.,
Gene P. King our angel, Lockie and Janice, and of course, Bill (wonderful photographer even then!) eating our
meager lunches in Market Square, daily hugs from Abe that kept me going....
Thanks for doing the work to keep the place alive! Laurie Cave (Laura Pearce 67-69)

Comments: I looked up ivy, and found this contact. I attended ivy from 1977-79. My name is John Broody.
I am the person who pursued the closing of the school. I feel a lot of people should have the real story of why it happened.
I did not like the idea, but I could not be taken advantage of, and it really got to me when I saw others being helplessly
dismissed from the school, because of unjust financial demands. It effected the teachers and all involved I heard very badly.
But Morris could have stopped this in minutes, he chose not to. It turned literally into a federal case.
The whole thing haunts me, my apologies to some very fine people who did not deserve that to happen.
It's a long story, just seeing if this e-mail gets through. Feel free to contact me if you wish, JB.

Comments: I went to Ivy from Sept ’74 to March’77 and married another Ivy grad-Ron Seman of The Object Works.
I majored in photography (with Rich Burke) and am now doing somewhat the same thing only I x-rays.-I’m a radiology
technologist. Chuck hung out with me and Karen Kokiko and Ron Larsen and a Valerie.
We were all very closeat the time and it was sad to see he passed away.
Thanks again for working so hard on the website-it brings back good (but sometimes hazy) memories.

Comments: I moved to Florida after graduating and working for General Electric, in 1981, and have resided here since.
I keep up with my creative side in many different venues, but not professionally, I have worked in the real estate title industry for twenty years and have excelled in that career path.  I truly have wondered what happened to all since then, as I consider my time at Ivy, one of the best times in my life.

Comments: I studied Graphic design at Ivy and I hated it. So I stopped anything artistic and went to work for Exxon Mobil.  After 29 years, I am still there - now as a dispatcher for the vessels. A few years ago I had a pulmonary embolism which made me consider the paths that I have taken, and the direction I still have yet to take.  So I starting taking Sculpture classes - figurative.  And I LOVE it.  I hope to retire in 5 years and just sculpt. If you would like to see some photos, send me an email and I will forward them. I am still learning, but the human body is beautiful and there is so much to learn.  So little time.  I sometimes wonder if I would enjoy it as much if I sculpted years ago.  Maturity has helped, not that I have much of that.  I also scuba dive on occasion, and I love the Blues.  I guess my time at Ivy was not a waste, as I did receive a good artistic background.  I am currently taking classes at The Art League in Alexandria, VA during the evenings.  Great teachers

Does anyone have any info on Claudia Hill, Ivy School of Art, circa 1966-1972?  Claudia was a drummer in the band the Pink Panthers and possibly performed in other music groups. She graduated from Upper St. Clair High School in 1966.
     Thanks.

Only attended Ivy for one semester. Went to college instead. I sold magazine advertising for several years for a publisher on Fifth Ave in NYC and from that, started a small graphic design company to service my clients who needed ad design. That was 21 years ago. I married an artist as well. He is a graphic designer in the marketing dept at a local hospital. We have maintained The River Studio over the years as a supplemental business. Always looking for new clients or freelance work. It's been a great life. I look fondly at my time at Ivy and the great girls I hung out with in the basement dorm at Dusquesne. I'd LOVE to hear from any/all of them.
